Discover Himi, Toyama: Fresh Seafood, Hot Springs, and Manga Magic by the Sea

Welcome to Himi, a charming coastal city in the northwestern part of Toyama Prefecture, where the beauty of the sea meets abundant nature and a proud fishing heritage.

Himi Banya-gai (氷見漁港場外市場 ひみ番屋街)

Himi Banya-gai

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the local culture is to visit Himi Banya-gai, a bustling market filled with freshly caught fish and regional specialties. Strolling through the market, you’ll encounter mouthwatering displays of “Himi Kan-buri,” a famously fatty yellowtail available in winter, as well as white shrimp and firefly squid from Toyama Bay. Friendly vendors offer everything from savory dried seafood to flavorful local sake, and the on-site restaurants serve up irresistible sushi and hearty bowls of Himi udon noodles.

After exploring the market, many visitors head to the nearby Himi-Banya Onsen Sōyu, a natural hot spring facility popular with both locals and travelers. Here you can soak in mineral-rich waters believed to help with circulation and pain relief, then enjoy a casual meal at the “Hokkori Shokudō” eatery, which is open to anyone looking for a warm meal.

Fujiko Fujio A Art Collection 氷見市潮風ギャラリー(藤子不二雄Ⓐアートコレクション)

If you’re a fan of Japanese pop culture, the Fujiko Fujio A Art Collection—located at the Himi City Shiokaze Gallery—is a delightful place to see original artwork by Himi-born manga artist Fujiko Fujio A. From Ninja Hattori-kun to other beloved characters, you’ll find statues and playful installations scattered around town that bring the manga world to life.

Himi City Museum 氷見市立博物館

The museum’s exhibits showcase everything from ancient artifacts to the city’s modern-day fishing practices, making it a wonderful stop for those who love to learn about a destination’s roots.

For an even deeper dive into local hot spring culture, consider visiting the “Bijin no Yu” Onsen Area in the Himi Onsen Kyō district. Often hailed as the “Hot Spring of Beauty,” these baths are known for their sodium-chloride-rich waters, which many say leave the skin smoother and more supple. Several inns and day-trip facilities make it easy to enjoy these soothing waters while gazing at scenic views of Toyama Bay and, on clear days, the stunning Tateyama Mountain Range in the distance.

Himi Seaside Botanical Garden 氷見市海浜植物園シーサイドパーク

If you’re seeking family-friendly fun amid greenery, head to the Himi Seaside Botanical Garden (Seaside Park), where you can appreciate the vibrant coastal flora. Children will love the “fuwafuwa dome” trampoline and indoor play areas, ensuring an enjoyable experience regardless of the weather.

Himinoe Park provides another peaceful spot to unwind by the sea. Spread out on the grassy lawn, watch your kids run around the playground, or take in the expansive view from the park’s observation area, which looks out over the water toward the uninhabited Karajima Island.

Manga Road (Ninja Hattori-kun Road) 忍者ハットリくんロード

Ninja Hattori-kun Road

Your manga adventure can continue along the Manga Road (Ninja Hattori-kun Road), a fun-filled stretch lined with character statues that sometimes chat when you approach. This route extends from Himi Station to the Central Town shopping district, and it includes the popular Ninja Hattori-kun Karakuri Clock, which offers a whimsical show every hour (except during winter months).

Himi City Fisheries Cultural Exchange Center 氷見市漁業文化交流センター

If you’d like to learn more about the city’s enduring fishing culture, make time for the Himi City Fisheries Cultural Exchange Center, known locally as “Himi no Umi Tankenkan.” Through VR and AR exhibits, visitors can experience fishing from a virtual boat or explore beneath Toyama Bay. Afterward, you can sample freshly caught seafood at the on-site “Himi Ganpeki Ichiba,” indulging in dishes like Himi Chirashi Sushi sets that showcase the local catch of the day.

Toyama Prefectural Seedling Aquaculture Center 富山県栽培漁業センター

A short journey from the city center—20 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bus—the Toyama Prefectural Seedling Aquaculture Center is a wonderful place for both children and adults to gain hands-on experience with aquaculture. Admission is free, and you can feed fish in the indoor tanks or interact with young fish in the “fureai pool” before they’re released into the wild.

To catch the clearest views, consider visiting in the afternoon when the light best illuminates the mountains and the horizon.

Whether you’re savoring a steaming bowl of Himi udon, soaking in a rejuvenating onsen, or snapping photos of iconic manga characters, Himi offers an inviting blend of modern fun, timeless tradition, and natural beauty. Each season brings its  charm, and no matter when you visit, you’ll be greeted by friendly locals, fresh seafood, and spectacular vistas—ensuring that your time in Himi will be filled with warmth and wonderful memories.
